Nathan Chen isn’t skating in Italy, but men’s figure skating still revolves around him

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) Nathan Chen competes in the figure skating men’s short program at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2022. Glimpses of the gold medalist can be seen in the skaters at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics.

Nathan Chen has hopped a plane to Italy. Tonight, he’ll be in the Milano Ice Skating Arena, analyzing every move of the men’s Olympic figure skating field. Yet he’ll have an unusual vantage point for these Winter Games.

“Now,” said Chen, “I get to see what it looks like on the other side.”

Chen never officially retired, but he hasn’t competed since 2022, when he became the only male singles skater to win two gold medals in a single Olympics. His main role in Italy will be schmoozing with sponsors and offering Utah 2034 donors commentary on the men’s skating competition.

Where is Nathan Chen? Why Olympian won't be at 2026 Olympics

Ilia Malinin has won two figure skating world titles and three U.S. National Championships thanks in part to his ability to land a quadruple axel.

The male figure skaters took to the ice on Saturday, prompting many to wonder where is Olympic gold medalist Nathan Chen.

The decorated skater was last seen on the Olympic stage in Beijing, where the Olympian won two gold medals. He brought home gold in the men's singles figure skating event and in the team competition.

While Chen has not officially retired from skating, he said he would not be competing in the 2026 Olympic Winter Games as he attends medical school.

Here's why Nathan Chen won't be at the 2026 Winter Olympics

WASHINGTON — Olympic gold medalist Nathan Chen won't return to the ice skating rink for the Winter Olympics in 2026.

The decorated figure skater has previously confirmed he will not defend his title in the upcoming Winter Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. Chen, 26, told the Los Angeles Times in August 2025 that he won't be at the upcoming Games as he will embark on a new career in medicine.

"I just want to open doors to kind of see what’s the best sort of approach for me,” Chen told The Times. “And frankly, at this point in time in my life, I’ve already accomplished enough in skating that I’m quite satisfied with my career.”
