Former Florida football coach Steve Spurrier says 'no rules anymore' in college football

In the 1990s, as Florida football coach, Spurrier quipped Florida State should be re-named "Free Shoes University" after the rival school was being investigated by the NCAA for players receiving improper gifts.

So, Spurrier didn't hold back during a conference call on Feb. 9 celebrating his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. Spurrier was asked about Clemson coach Dabo Swinney's claims of tampering by Ole Miss coach Pete Golding and offered a blunt response.

"I thought by now, somebody would've told Dabo, 'Dabo, there ain't no rules anymore,'” Spurrier said on the call, according to Jon Blau of the Charleston Post and Courier.

Steve Spurrier: ‘Somebody Tell Dabo There’s No Rules Now’

Seemingly every national analyst has weighed in on Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney calling out Ole Miss for tampering.

Now, Swinney’s old rival – the “Ol’ Ball Coach” — has chimed in.

Former South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier met with the media via Zoom on Monday ahead of his induction into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

Spurrier, who was 5-2 against Swinney during his tenure with the Gamecocks, was asked about Swinney’s tampering comments and how he went off on Ole Miss for tampering.

“I thought by now somebody would have told Dabo, ‘Dabo, they ain’t no rules anymore,’” Spurrier said, laughing. “There are [rules] still on the books I guess back there about you can’t do after this date or that date. Gosh, basketball, they’ve got pros coming back to playing college there. So I don’t know. I don’t know if they’re gonna ever enforce any rules now or not. But I think Dabo has learned now he’s gotta start paying his players just like everybody is, or you’ll get left behind.

SEC coaching legend on tampering: ‘There ain’t no rules anymore’

Add Steve Spurrier to the list of those lamenting the current state of college sports recruiting.

Spurrier spoke to reporters via Zoom on Monday, in advance of his induction in to the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame. During the course of the session, Spurrier was asked about the recent controversy over transfer portal tampering, notably when Clemson’s Dabo Swinney gave a detailed account of Ole Miss’ alleged actions in flipping linebacker Luke Ferrelli last month.

“Somebody needs to tell Dabo there ain’t no rules anymore,” Spurrier said, via Jon Blau of the Charleston Post & Courier. “They’re still on the books back there [with the NCAA], where you can do it after this date or that date. But in basketball, gosh, you’ve got pros coming back to play in college there.
