Cocciaretto upsets Gauff in Doha; into WTA 1000 last 16 for first time
Lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto scored her third career Top 10 win and advanced to the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event for the first time with a straight-sets upset of Coco Gauff at the Qatar TotalEnergies Open.
Lucky loser Elisabetta Cocciaretto scored the third Top 10 win of her career — and first outside a Grand Slam — with a 6-4, 6-2 upset of No. 4 seed Coco Gauff in the Qatar TotalEnergies Open second round. The Italian advances to the last 16 of a WTA 1000 event for the first time.
Cocciaretto's previous Top 10 wins had come over Petra Kvitova at Roland Garros 2023 and Jessica Pegula at Wimbledon 2025, but she had not won a set from Gauff in three previous professional meetings. However, she did have a junior win over the American to draw on, having defeated her 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 at the Australian Open in 2018.
WTA Doha Day 3 Predictions Including Coco Gauff vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto
Day 3 of the WTA 1000 tournament in Doha will see more elite players join the fray, with Coco Gauff in action against Elisabetta Cocciaretto. There will also be an all-Czech showdown as Karolina Muchova faces teenage sensation Tereza Valentova. As always, we at LWOT will offer predictions for every match on the slate, but who will advance?
Linda Noskova’s push toward the top 10 has gathered early momentum in Doha. The ninth seed was in command from the outset, brushing aside Maya Joint in two quick sets with the kind of authority that underlines her growing belief and firepower.
Next up is a first-ever meeting with Varvara Gracheva, who squeezed past Laura Siegemund 7–6, 6–4 and has yet to drop a set this week, including qualifying. That clean run looks vulnerable here. Noskova owns the heavier weapons and, crucially, the hunger of a player ready to force her way into the next round. It won’t be easy, though.

Coco Gauff has never enjoyed the Qatar Open. She had played eight matches in Doha, winning four, before entering the 2026 edition.
Tuesday’s 6-4, 6-2 loss to Elisabetta Cocciaretto in her opening match will still have stung more than most, not for the result, but for the recurrence of problems with Gauff’s forehand that look set to define her coming season if she can not take the time away from tournament play to fix them.
“I just feel like some of the things I’ve been working on in practice aren’t translating to the match court, which is super frustrating,” Gauff said in a mixed zone after the match.
