Auston Matthews Named Captain of 2026 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Auston Matthews (Scottsdale, Ariz.), who currently serves as captain of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, has been named captain of the 2026 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team it was announced today by USA Hockey.
In addition, Matthew Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.), who is an alternate captain for the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers, and Charlie McAvoy (Long Beach, N.Y.), an alternate captain for the Boston Bruins, have been named alternate captains of Team USA.
"Auston, Charlie and Matthew did a great job in leading our team a year ago at the 4 Nations Face-Off and it’s great to have them back in those roles for the Olympics,” said Bill Guerin (Wilbraham, Mass.), general manager of the 2026 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team and also president of hockey operations and general manager of the Minnesota Wild. "They all bring different leadership traits to the table and I know all three are excited, as is our whole team, about representing our country as part of Team USA.”

MILAN — Auston Matthews has been named captain for the U.S. men's hockey team at the 2026 Olympics.
Matthews, the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs, also wore the C at last February's 4 Nations Face-Off, where the U.S lost to Canada in the final.
"Auston, Charlie and Matthew did a great job in leading our team a year ago at Four Nations and it's great to have them back in those roles for the Olympics," U.S. general manager Bill Guerin said in a statement. "They all bring different leadership traits to the table and I know all three are excited, as is our whole team, about representing our country as part of Team USA."

MILAN — Auston Matthews was named captain of Team USA for the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026 on Sunday.
The United States named Charlie McAvoy and Matthew Tkachuk as alternates, keeping the same leadership group from the 4 Nations Face-Off last season, when the U.S. lost to Canada 3-2 in overtime in the championship game.
General manager Bill Guerin and coach Mike Sullivan liked the chemistry at 4 Nations and wanted to keep it intact. Of the 25 players on the Olympic roster, 21 played at 4 Nations, and that doesn’t include defenseman Quinn Hughes, who missed the tournament because of a lower-body injury.
