American snowboarding star Red Gerard will miss big air finals. He’s OK with that – The Athletic

LIVIGNO, Italy — Needing to erase his first jump of the night and pair a strong score with his second round 83.50, Red Gerard pointed his snowboard forward and, from atop a ramp standing roughly 170 feet high, plunged downward toward his final jump on the opening night of the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Gerard took off, spun four and a half full revolutions in a backside direction while holding the board (a backside 1620 mute) and landed cleanly. He smiled and tossed a fist through the air. The crowd surrounding the base of the jump cheered.

Teenage Team USA snowboarder qualifies for Winter Olympics men’s big air final

MILAN, Italy — Snowboarders took flight on Thursday during one of the most visually stunning Winter Olympics events.
Four snowboarders from Team USA took part in the men's big air qualifying at the 2026 Games, including newcomers Ollie Martin and Jake Canter from Colorado and veterans Red Gerard and Sean FitzSimons, from Colorado and Oregon, respectively.
The athletes launched off a massive ramp and performed the best tricks they could across three runs. Points were awarded to the athletes based on the tricks' execution, technical difficulty, and style.
Of the four, only Martin scored enough points to place among the top 12 snowboarders, qualifying for the event's finals on Saturday. Canter, Gerard, and FitzSimons placed outside of the top 12.
