Is Timberwolves' Mike Conley trade a precursor to a Giannis Antetokounmpo deal?

In a three-team trade involving the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Pistons, the Minnesota Timberwolves have dumped Mike Conley's $10.8 million expiring contract, according to ESPN. In the deal, which reportedly sends Conley and Jaden Ivey to Chicago and Kevin Huerter and Dario Saric to Detroit, the Wolves are giving the Pistons a 2026 pick swap.

In the immortal words of Brian Windhorst: Why would they do that?

Well, Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly likes the idea of teaming up with Anthony Edwards in Minnesota, and the interest is mutual. The Wolves don't have the easiest path to acquiring Antetokounmpo, as they lack tradable draft picks, but they may be able to effectively turn some of their players into picks in a multi-team blockbuster.

'I love that guy': Pistons trade Jaden Ivey in three-team deal, acquire two players

Detroit — The Detroit Pistons are sending guard Jaden Ivey to the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team trade. The deal was confirmed with a source by The Detroit News on Tuesday afternoon, and officially announced by the Pistons later that night.

Ivey is part of a deal that lands the Pistons guard Kevin Huerter, forward Dario Saric and a 2026 first-round protected swap from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Joining Ivey with the Bulls is veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr., who was sent by the Timberwolves.

Ivey was admired and loved throughout the locker room, and his departure slightly overshadowed the Pistons' 124-121 victory over the Denver Nuggets. The Pistons traded their former lottery pick just hours before their game at Little Caesars Arena.

Former Purdue basketball standout finds new NBA home after trade

Former Purdue basketball star Jaden Ivey is changing addresses, but remaining relatively close to home.

The Detroit Pistons are sending Ivey to the Chicago Bulls as part of a three-team deal that also includes the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Mike Conley Jr. will head to Chicago from Minnesota, while the Pistons receive a 2026 first-round pick from Minnesota along with Kevin Huerter and Dario Saric, ESPN's Shams Charania reported.

After playing two seasons at Purdue and being a first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2022, the Pistons drafted Ivey fifth overall in that year's draft. Ivey finished sixth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2023, starting 73 games and averaging 16.3 points and 5.2 assists.
