Westchester County placed under a coastal flood advisory Sunday

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory at 3:32 p.m. on Saturday valid for Sunday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. for Westchester County.

“Up to one foot of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline,” says the weather service. “Additional minor coastal flooding is possible with high tide cycles late Sunday through early Monday.”

“Minor flooding in the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline. Some roads and low-lying properties including parking lots, parks, lawns, and homes and businesses with basements near the waterfront will experience minor flooding,” describes the weather service. “If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.”

NYC weather: Coastal flood statement affecting Staten Island and Brooklyn Sunday

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood statement at 3:32 p.m. on Saturday valid for Sunday between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. for Staten Island and Brooklyn.

"Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected in vulnerable areas near the waterfront and shoreline," adds the weather service. "Additional minor coastal flooding is possible with high tide cycles late Sunday through early Monday."

"Brief minor flooding of the more vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline," comments the weather service. "Do not drive through flooded roadways."

A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is either imminent or already occurring. In flood-prone areas, it's crucial to move immediately to higher ground. A flash flood is a sudden and violent inundation that can develop within minutes to hours, and it can even happen in areas not currently experiencing rainfall.

Coastal flood advisory for Barnstable and Dukes counties for Sunday and Monday

The National Weather Service issued a coastal flood advisory at 1:01 p.m. on Saturday valid from Sunday 8 a.m. until Monday 2 p.m. for Barnstable and Dukes counties.

“One to two feet of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways (4.2 to 13.4 feet Mean Lower Low Water),” describes the weather service. “Sub-freezing temperatures and cold road surfaces may allow for some of the storm surge to freeze. This would result in prolonged issues on those vulnerable roadways and also delay drainage.”

“Pockets of shallow flooding less than one foot deep. This mainly affects low-lying areas and roads near Edgartown Harbor, including the Chappy Ferry Dock. Shallow flooding may also approach Five Corners in Vineyard Haven,” adds the weather service. “If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.”
