Weekend Nor'easter A Major Winter Storm With Heavy Snow, Wind In Carolinas, Virginia, Then Coastal New England
An East Coast storm this weekend will intensify into a bomb cyclone, with heavy snow, strong winds and coastal flooding from the nor'easter from the Carolinas to New England. A small portion of North Carolina could also see blizzard conditions.
This latest storm has been named Winter Storm Gianna by The Weather Channel.

Winter storm watches and warnings are in effect for a large part of the Southeast, and parts of the mid-Atlantic and New England.
Powerful bomb cyclone to deliver snow and hurricane-force winds to Southeast this weekend
Snow, damaging winds and dangerous coastal flooding are expected to impact parts of the southern Appalachians, the Carolinas and southern Virginia this weekend as a powerful winter storm rapidly intensifies off the Southeast coast.
Impacts will begin late Friday into Saturday, with snow and hurricane-force wind gusts possible along parts of the North Carolina and Virginia coast by Saturday night. Coastal New England, particularly eastern Massachusetts, could see snow and wind later in the weekend if the storm tracks closer to shore.
A low-pressure system is expected to form near the North Carolina coast late Friday before rapidly strengthening as it moves north Saturday, a process known as bombogenesis. As the bomb cyclone intensifies, it will draw very cold air southward, allowing snow to fall across areas that don’t often see significant winter weather.

Weekend bomb cyclone forecast calls for snow. How much will fall?
Whether you call it a bomb cyclone, nor'easter or a blizzard, it's going to be a memorable weekend weather event for some along the East Coast as January turns to February.
“This storm could unleash heavy snow and howling winds across the Southeast this weekend," said Scott Homan, AccuWeather senior meteorologist, in a Jan. 29 email to USA TODAY.
A few snow flurries are even possible in Florida as bitterly cold air sweeps south all the way through the Sunshine State.
"People need to prepare for the possibility of dangerous blizzard conditions in some coastal areas from North Carolina to the southern Jersey shore," Homan said. "Blizzard conditions may reach parts of Long Island and southern New England."
