Activists prepare thousands of protestors: 'They are coming for you.'

Two people have been killed this month in Minnesota while monitoring the activity of immigration officials, but that hasn't deterred tens of thousands of others who appear eager to volunteer for similar roles.

More than 147,000 people all over the country signed up for an online training session on Jan. 26, learning how to lawfully monitor and record immigration arrests. The next training, run by national protest and organizing groups, is scheduled for Feb. 5.

Since the immigration surge in Minneapolis began in December, organized neighbors have tracked immigration agents through private messaging groups, warned immigrant neighbors using whistles and car horns when arrests appear imminent, and filmed arrests to provide a record of the encounters.

Attorneys urge people to know their rights amid reports of abuses by federal agents

A national nonprofit is in the Twin Cities to help people know their rights if they have questions about a recent encounter with a federal agent.

The National Police Accountability Project says civil rights attorneys are receiving numerous inquiries about recent encounters with federal agents.

“They’ve just been inundated with requests for help, people trying to get support,” said Lauren Bonds, executive director of the National Police Accountability Project. She leads a team of 550 civil rights attorneys nationwide.

With the wind whipping outside, driving wind chills down to minus 20, First Unitarian Universalist Church in Rochester was full of people looking to help their neighbors.

Nearly 100 people came out last Thursday for the Immigrant Defense Network’s (IDN) constitutional observer training to document federal immigration enforcement activity in Minnesota. As thousands of Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) agents have flooded the Twin Cities, these observers have been a constant presence on the streets, recording federal agents and alerting the community of their actions.
