'Resident Evil: Requiem' might actually get to have its cake and eat it too

Resident Evil is a series that, I'll admit, I appreciate more than I like. It has nothing to do with the quality of the games, mind you, but more to do with the fact that they're usually some combination of scary and anxiety-inducing. It's a compliment, really. They work a little too well on me.

So, when I sat down for a beefy three-hour demo of the next mainline game in the series, Resident Evil Requiem, I wasn't sure what I would get out of the experience. Requiem has an interesting two-pronged approach that tries to reconcile the more classic horror elements of the earlier games in the series with the balls-to-the-wall action vibes of games like Resident Evil 4, to the point where that game's protagonist, Leon S. Kennedy, is back as one of the two playable characters in this game. I figured I would like playing as Leon, at least, but I wasn't sure about Grace Ashcroft, the other character who represents the more exploratory, stealthy, and puzzle-solving-focused side.

‘Resident Evil Requiem’ Devs Talk “Vital” Return to Raccoon City, Tease “Umbrella Curse”, Claire And Ada & Pairing Leon Kennedy With A New Leading Lady

It’s time to dust off our trusty pistols and break out the leather jacket because we’re finally headed to bingo. OK, not exactly bingo, but instead the iconic locale of Raccoon City. Not seen since 1999’s Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (or technically Resident Evil 3’s 2020 remake), the latest game in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil Requiem, is returning to its beloved roots.

Taking place about 30 years after the missile strike on Raccoon City, Resident Evil Requiem centers on FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, the daughter of Resident Evil Outbreak protagonist Alyssa Ashcroft, who is still haunted by the mysterious death of her mother some eight years prior. When she is thrown into an investigation of ritualistic murders connected to her mother’s past in Raccoon City, she catches the decrepit eye of a former Umbrella scientist named Dr. Victor Gideon, who claims she holds the key to unlocking a secret project that is probably super darksided. Since there’s still a month to go until the game’s release, we don’t know all the details just yet, but somewhere along the way of Grace’s investigation, she crosses paths with fan favorite and resident badass, RPD’s Leon Kennedy.

Resident Evil Requiem Is Two Games in One (and a Lot of Fun)

The long-running Resident Evil series contains multitudes. At times it’s been about quiet menace, carefully weighing when to use each of the handful of bullets in your pocket as you try to explore and solve puzzles while avoiding terrifying and often unkillable monsters. At other times it’s been about kicking ass, tearing through hordes of zombies with grenades and shotguns. Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline entry, dares to ask: why not both?

Requiem pulls off this feat of being two games in one with dual protagonists: series newcomer FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft for the classic survival horror and recurring lead and one-man army Leon Kennedy for the action. I recently played a demo that gave me a taste of both — three hours from the beginning of the game, with a lengthy Grace section bookended by bursts of Leon-fueled frenzy.
