Some fun stuff about Notre Dame and the final Coaches Poll

One of the really fun things to do over the course of the college football season is to critique all of the AP Top 25 voters each week about their Notre Dame ranking (or whatever). Their votes are very public, and they are held accountable by CFB fans.

The coaches poll, however… yeah they don’t share the same values about transparency. That is, until, the final vote happens, and we get to see how each coach (or SID maybe/probably) voted. Notre Dame finished the season ranked #11 in the coaches poll, so let’s talk about how that came about.

SOUTH BEND — Staying home for the holidays cost Notre Dame football two spots in the final US LBM Coaches Poll.

The Irish ranked 11th in the final Top 25 released on Jan. 21, two spots behind Alabama (11-4) and one behind Oklahoma (10-3). Both SEC schools reached the College Football Playoff, facing off in the first round.

In the season’s final Associated Press media poll, Notre Dame dropped one spot to No. 10.

Ranked as high as No. 5 by the coaches and dropping as low as No. 21 in 2025, the Irish reeled off 10 straight wins after an 0-2 start. They were left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff on Dec. 7 and subsequently declined an invitation to face Brigham Young in the Pop-Tarts Bowl.

Where did Notre Dame land in the final AP Top 25 poll for 2025-2026?

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish haven't played a football game since November, yet they still managed to slide one spot in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll of the 2025-2026 season.

Plenty of teams, including teams that lost in the college football playoff, moved as well. Voters had their say after Indiana beat Miami (FL) 27-21 to win the national championship.

Indiana didn't move, staying at No. 1. That's obviously expected. Miami's appearance in the final game moved the Hurricanes up eight spots to No. 2.

Ole Miss, who fell to Miami in the semifinal round, jumped three spots to No. 3. Oregon, who Indiana beat in the semifinal, moved up one spot to No. 4. Ohio State, who lost to Miami earlier in the playoff, fell one spot and rounds out the top 5.
