'H is for Hawk' review: Claire Foy and her pet bird take flight
A woman struggling after the death of her father turns to a pet hawk for companionship in "H is for Hawk," an emotionally raw story about grieving and learning to move on that refuses to tidy itself up like so many stories told in a similar vein.
Claire Foy plays Helen, who spirals emotionally after the death of her photographer father, Alisdair (Brendan Gleeson). Lost, Helen adopts a goshawk and throws herself into the world of big bird ownership, gloves and all.
Given the choice of two similar hawks, one more well-behaved than the other, she chooses the one who requires more work. She's up for the challenge and has plenty of time to devote to her new friend.

Adapted from Helen Macdonald’s acclaimed 2014 memoir of the same name, H is for Hawk is about an academic who’s suddenly lost after the unexpected death of their father (Macdonald identifies as nonbinary and uses they/them pronouns). In grief, they take on the training of a young goshawk, one of the more difficult raptors in falconry’s pantheon, and become increasingly feral themself. Co-written by the director Philippa Lowthorpe and the novelist Emma Donoghue (Room), the film stars Claire Foy (The Crown) as Macdonald and Brendan Gleeson (Harry Potter) as their father, the award-winning British photographer Alisdair Macdonald. The film enlaces the lush Cambridge countryside and Macdonald’s raw psychological journey. Foy, as always, is wonderful. —Paulina Prosnitz
