‘The Secret Agent’ Lands Brazil’s Second Best Picture Oscar Nomination

Wagner Moura is also nominated for best actor; if the movie wins best international film, it will mark the first time in nearly 40 years a country has gone back to back in that category.

Last year, I’m Still Here became the first Brazilian film ever to be nominated for the best picture Oscar. This year, The Secret Agent has become the second.

It’s an astounding turn of events with the Academy Awards, given that until I’m Still Here, Brazil had been shut out of the Oscars’ best international film (formerly best foreign-language film) category for decades, going back to 1998’s Central Station (which was, like I’m Still Here, directed by Walter Salles). The Secret Agent is also nominated there, and favored to pull off a second win in a row for Brazil, given that it’s already won the equivalent trophy at the Critics Choice and Golden Globe Awards. Should the film indeed take home the 2026 best international film Oscar, it’d be the first time in nearly 40 years that a country pulled off back to back victories (1987’s Babette’s Feast and 1998’s Pelle the Conqueror, both of Denmark).

‘The Secret Agent’ Star Wagner Moura Becomes First Brazilian Nominated for Best Actor Oscar

Wagner Moura has picked up the torch for Brazil at the Oscars. The 49-year-old actor has made history as the first Brazilian to be nominated for best actor for his towering performance as a professor hiding out amid the political turmoil of the Brazilian military dictatorship in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s “The Secret Agent.”

Moura is nominated alongside Timothée Chalamet (“Marty Supreme”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“One Battle After Another”), Ethan Hawke (“Blue Moon”) and Michael B. Jordan (“Sinners”). In addition to Moura, “The Secret Agent” was also nominated for international feature and best picture.

In addition to his historic nom for Brazil, Moura is also the sixth Latino to be nominated in the best actor category after José Ferrer, Anthony Quinn, Edward James Olmos, Demián Bichir and Colman Domingo. Ferrer is the only winner in the lineup for his performance in “Cyrano de Bergerac” (1950).

Wagner Moura makes history as first Brazilian lead actor Oscar nominee

Wagner Moura made history Thursday morning when he was nominated for an Academy Award in the category for actor in a leading role for his performance in Kleber Mendonça Filho's 2025 film "The Secret Agent."

This historic nomination makes Moura the first Brazilian actor nominated for an Oscar in this field.

In the film, Moura plays Armando, a former professor forced into hiding while trying to protect his young son during Brazil's military dictatorship during the 1970s.

Should he win at the March 15 ceremony, Moura would become the first Brazilian to win an Oscar in an acting category.

Moura is the third Brazilian national to be nominated for an acting Oscar, joining the mother-daughter duo of Fernanda Montenegro and Fernanda Torres — both of whom were nominated for actress in a leading role.
