Australian Open 2026: Casper Ruud will leave early to be with pregnant wife Maria

Casper Ruud has been runner-up at the US Open and twice at the French Open

Norway's Casper Ruud says he "probably won't be here the next day" if his wife goes into labour during the Australian Open.

Ruud, the 12th seed, beat Italy's Mattia Bellucci 6-1 6-2 6-4 in the first round in Melbourne on Monday.

"I have to thank Maria for letting me go in the first place. I know she's at home resting, getting ready," he said.

"Except for when I'm playing a match, the ringer is on all hours of the day just in case.

"There's more to life than just tennis, but I'm going to be here for as long as I can and as long as Maria lets me."

The No. 12 seed gave an update on impending fatherhood, noting his phone is only off in Melbourne while playing matches.

Casper Ruud posted one of the more decisive results on Day 2 of the Australian Open, brushing aside Mattia Bellucci with a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

It certainly helps that the three-time major finalist has extra inspiration behind his seventh appearance in Melbourne.

Last year, Ruud announced that he and Maria Galligani—who formally married in December and will celebrate with a wedding later this year—were expecting their first child, a daughter. As it stands, the father-to-be is in a race against the clock with Galligani due towards the tail end of the Grand Slam event.

Casper Ruud Is A Master Traveller (And Pretty Good At Tennis)

The world No. 13 and soon-to-be dad shares his goals for 2026 and how he survives on the road for almost 300 days of the year

CASPER RUUD has a baby on the way. Like, imminently. A few days before his chat with Esquire, Ruud tells a reporter that he’s ready to fly back to Norway at a moment’s notice if he gets a call that the baby’s coming. Reading this doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence Ruud will even make our interview. Nonetheless, Ruud does indeed show. Now, ideally, he’ll get through the Australian Open before he gets that call.
