New York Giants fans can breathe a sigh of relief. The Giants and John Harbaugh finalized a five-year deal on Saturday to make the Super Bowl XLVII champion their next head coach.

“It’s the New York Football Giants,” Harbaugh told The Athletic. “I can’t wait to get started. I know how great our fans are. I’ve seen them close up enough. We are going to build a team that’s going to play a brand of football that you will be proud of.”

Negotiations, which began late Wednesday night, continued through the week as the team and coach worked to hammer out a deal.

Report: John Harbaugh will report directly to ownership

The Giants got the coach they wanted. And the coach got at least one of the key terms he wanted.

Via Albert Breer of SI.com, John Harbaugh will report directly to ownership. Previously (and for decades if not forever), the Giants’ head coach reported to the General Manager.

On Friday night, Ian O’Conner of TheAthletic.com strongly implied that Harbaugh wanted a parallel track to management with G.M. Joe Schoen. The Giants gave it to him.

To Schoen’s credit, he didn’t fight it. If Harbaugh thrives, Schoen thrives. The rising tide lifts all boats.

The tide will be rising in New York. As mentioned earlier today, Harbaugh went 33-18 over the last thee regular seasons — and got fired. If Harbaugh does that with the Giants, he’ll be canonized.

Giants reportedly agree to 5-year deal to hire John Harbaugh as next head coach

The New York Giants are getting the guy they've been pushing for since he became available: John Harbaugh.

The Giants and Harbaugh reportedly finalized their deal on Saturday, according to multiple reports. The deal is expected to be five years in length and with a total value of $100 million — one of the largest contracts in the league — according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.

“This is the New York Giants,” Harbaugh said, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. “I’m proud and honored to [be] the head coach of this historic franchise, and especially excited to work with the Mara and Tisch families. But most of all, I can’t wait to get started with the great players on this football team to see what we can accomplish together.”
