NBA hoping Grizzlies' Morant plays Sunday vs. Magic in London

The NBA hopes Memphis guard Ja Morant will be able to play Sunday, after the star missed Thursday's start of a two-game NBA Europe series against the Orlando Magic with a right calf issue.

Morant was in Berlin with his team for Thursday's game, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed some optimism that the two-time All-Star will play when the Grizzlies and Magic meet again in London.

"I know he has a tremendous following globally," Silver said. "And I wish he were able to play tonight. I'm still holding out hope he'll be able to play when we're in London on Sunday. So, yes, I'm disappointed he's not on the floor tonight, but I understand he's injured."

BERLIN — With trade winds swirling around Ja Morant, coach Tuomas Iisalo said the calf bruise that has sidelined the Memphis Grizzlies’ maligned star for five games is progressing to the point where Morant could play as early as Thursday.

Iisalo said Morant practiced Tuesday and that there “is a chance” Morant would play against the Orlando Magic either in Berlin on Thursday or in London on Sunday. He has been out with a right calf bruise since Jan. 4, but since then, numerous media outlets, including The Athletic, reported that the Grizzlies were, for the first time, listening to trade offers for Morant ahead of the NBA’s Feb. 5 trade deadline.

Is Ja Morant playing today? Grizzlies injury update amid trade rumors

The Memphis Grizzlies are in Europe for a two-game series against the Orlando Magic beginning on Thursday, Jan. 15 in Berlin, Germany, and they haven't escaped the trade rumors about Ja Morant while overseas.

Morant spoke to reporters in Germany for the first time since multiple reports indicated the Grizzlies were fielding trade offers for their star point guard for the first time ahead of the NBA's trade deadline next month. He offered few specifics about his emotions, noting that he had to "live with it."

The increasing trade speculation further complicates Morant's status moving forward, since he is also sidelined again by injury. He has missed the past five games with a right calf contusion and appeared in just 18 of 39 games this season. But he did travel with the team for this international showcase event. The Grizzlies and Magic are also scheduled to play on Sunday, Jan. 18 in London, England.
