Rockies agree to deal with 2024 All-Star utility man Willi Castro (report)
The Rockies have come to an agreement on a two-year free agent contract with utility man Willi Castro, according to a report from MLB Network insider Jon Heyman on Thursday. The club has not confirmed the move.
Castro enters his age-29 season coming off a down year that was split between the Twins and Cubs, who acquired the utilityman from Minnesota in a July 31 trade for a pair of Minor Leaguers.
He brings some experience to a young infield group. The Rockies finished the season with rookies Kyle Karros at third base, Ryan Ritter at second base and Blaine Crim at first base. Troy Johnston, who debuted with the Marlins last year, also could fit in at first base and the outfield.

Castro, 29 in April, just finished a strong three-year run as one of the better multi-positional players in the sport. That run ended with a deep slump just before he hit free agency but he has still secured a nice deal for himself.
He was non-tendered by the Tigers after the 2022 season and then landed with the Twins via a minor league deal ahead of the 2023 campaign. That minor league pact turned into a huge win for Minnesota. Castro cracked the Opening Day roster in 2023 and went on to have a strong season, getting into 124 games and stepping to the plate 409 times. The switch-hitter launched nine home runs and drew walks at an 8.3% clip. His .257/.339/.411 batting line led to a 107 wRC+, indicating he was seven percent above average at the plate overall. He also stole 33 bases in 38 attempts.

With a full-scale rebuild underway, the Colorado Rockies reached an agreement with Willi Castro on a two-year, $12.8 million contract, league sources said on Thursday, adding an experienced player who will bring defensive versatility, switch-hitting ability and plus speed to Coors Field.
Coming off a 119-loss season, this deal represents a sensible move for depth as new president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta begins to put his imprint on the Rockies. Over his seven seasons in the majors, Castro has logged significant time at shortstop, second base and third base, as well as all three outfield positions.
