Hornets to retire Dell Curry's No. 30 in March

The Charlotte Hornets are retiring Dell Curry's No. 30 jersey in the home arena rafters March 19 against the Orlando Magic.

Curry, the 1994 Sixth Man of the Year for Charlotte, ranks second in career points scored (9,839) in Hornets history. Curry spent 10 of his 16 NBA seasons in Charlotte (1988-98) and currently serves as a Hornets team ambassador as well as television analyst.

"I never imagined it would happen," Curry said. "It means so much to me. I do it because it's what I love to do. The game gave me so much, the fans gave me so much and I want to stay involved just to give back what I can and make this organization what it should be and give the fans, the team and the broadcast and the show that it's fun, we're having a great time and come celebrate, come support. … Man, it would be an injustice to try to put into words what this means."

Hornets will reportedly retire Dell Curry's No. 30 jersey in March

The Charlotte Hornets will honor 16-year NBA veteran Dell Curry on March 19, when the team retires his No. 30 jersey.

Curry is now more widely recognized as the father of Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry. However, long before his eldest son started making waves in the NBA and rewriting records, Dell was known as one of the best long-distance shooters of his era.

Charlotte was fortunate to have Dell Curry for 10 of his 16 years in the league. During his tenure with the Hornets, the team made four appearances in the Eastern Conference playoffs, advancing to the semifinals on two occasions. Curry played much of his career in a reserve or sixth-man role and earned the Sixth Man of the Year award during the 1993-94 season.

Dell Curry finally getting his No. 30 jersey retired by Charlotte

Dell Curry had stopped wondering if the Charlotte Hornets were going to retire his number. He figured that if it was going to happen, it probably would have taken place years ago.

The Hornets announced Wednesday that Curry — the father of Stephen and Seth Curry — will get his No. 30 retired in a ceremony on March 23 when the team plays host to the Orlando Magic. He will be the second person whose jersey is retired by Charlotte, joining the late Bobby Phills.

“I never imagined it would happen," Curry said. "It means so much to me. I do it because it’s what I love to do. The game gave me so much, the fans gave me so much and I want to stay involved just to give back what I can and make this organization what it should be and give the fans, the team and the broadcast and the show that it’s fun, we’re having a great time and come celebrate, come support. … Man, it would be an injustice to try to put into words what this means.”
