Who is Alberto Mendoza? Meet Indiana football's younger brother

ATLANTA — Indiana football fans know they have to pay close attention to see which Mendoza is under center once a game gets into the second half.

Fernando Mendoza won a Heisman as the starting quarterback, but his younger brother has received plenty of opportunities backing him up with the No. 1 Hoosiers (14-0) blowing teams out on a weekly basis.

Here’s what to know about Alberto Mendoza, the program’s No. 2 quarterback:

Fernando, IU’s current starter, hasn’t made an official decision about returning to Bloomington next season or entering the NFL draft, but the tiny bit of uncertainty left vanished with the Hoosiers signing TCU starter Josh Hoover in the transfer portal.

Who is Alberto Mendoza? Brother of Indiana Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza

Alberto Mendoza is an Indiana football quarterback and the younger brother of Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza.

Alberto Mendoza replaced his brother as the QB and Christopher Columbus High School in Miami, leading the team to two state championships. He had been a James Madison commit but followed Hoosiers coach Curt Cignetti to IU in December 2023.

Yes. They are brothers. Fernando is two years older than Alberto.

Fernando and Elsa Mendoza are the brothers' parents. Fernando Sr. played at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami like his sons, and is a doctor in Miami. Elsa Mendoza earned two degrees and played tennis at the University of Miami. She suffers from multiple sclerosis and uses a wheelchair.

Fernando Mendoza’s Brother, Alberto, is Also an Indiana Hoosiers QB

Fernando Mendoza is the Heisman Trophy-winning starting quarterback for the Indiana Hoosiers, but did you know that his brother, Alberto, is actually his direct backup quarterback?

So, if something happens on Friday, January 8, during the team’s College Football Playoff (CFP) game against the Oregon Ducks that forces Fernando to be sidelined, Alberto will step in.

Fernando, a Miami native, has helped Indiana secure a 13-0 record, a Big Ten Championship, and the No. 1 seed in the CFP. Now, standing behind Fernando is a brother who’s ready to step up and cover for his brother if something goes wrong.
