REDDING, Calif. — The first weekend of the year may be your first chance to catch your breath after the chaos of the holidays, but it won't be peaceful outside!
Significant wet weather punched into the Northstate late on Friday, marking the beginning of a series of storm systems that will impact the full weekend. The heaviest rain is expected to wrap up by 9 AM Saturday, but showers will linger all day, and thunderstorms are possible. The Storm Prediction Center has even issued a marginal risk for severe thunderstorms along the North Coast and throughout the Sacramento Valley, meaning that wind gusts over 58 MPH and brief tornadoes are possible in some of these cells. It is worth noting that the tornado risk is extremely low — just a 2% chance of occurring within 25 miles of any given location in the valley — but still worth planning ahead for. Rain totals throughout the day look to reach 0.50-1.50" for most locations, with the highest totals expected in spots like Redding, Paradise and Mount Shasta City.
