NEW ORLEANS — Layoffs are beginning at City Hall as the city works to close a budget gap. According to NOLA.com, 13 City Hall employees were laid off this month under mayor-elect Helena Moreno's plan to balance New Orleans' budget.
The cuts affect staff in the Mayor's Office of Youth and Families and the Office of Criminal Justice Coordination. The transition team says the departments will be combined with other agencies to streamline operations.
In November, Moreno announced job cuts, furloughs, and hiring freezes to help close a $222 million budget gap. The plan includes eliminating 36 unclassified positions, laying off 62 workers with less than a year on the job, freezing all hiring, cutting 134 vacant positions, and requiring non-public safety employees to take one unpaid furlough day per pay period.
