Bankruptcies hit US spirit makers as Americans drink and spend less

You'll have to excuse distillers and spirits makers if they need a stiff drink this holiday season.

The past year has dealt makers of whiskey and other liquor a mix of challenges – from Americans cutting back on their alcohol consumption for health and spending reasons to declining exports hampered by trade issues and tariffs.

It's not just restaurants and retailers hit with bankruptcies in 2025. Several distilleries across the U.S. filed for bankruptcy this year with the most recent of them being A.M. Scott Distillery, which was founded in 2022 in Troy, Ohio. The distiller, which operates a location in Dayton, filed for Chapter 11 on Dec. 22.

An Ohio-based distillery is one of several across the U.S. to file for bankruptcy this year.

A.M. Scott Distillery, which was founded in 2022 in Troy, Ohio, is the most recent spirits maker to do so.

The distiller, which operates a location in Dayton, filed for Chapter 11 on Dec. 22, USA TODAY reported. The distillery produces vodka, whiskey and gin and celebrates "the spirit of Ohio," according to its site.

The filing comes as makers of whiskey and other liquor faced a mix of challenges this past year – from Americans cutting back on their alcohol consumption for health and spending reasons to declining exports hampered by trade issues and tariffs.

U.S. Alcohol Industry Faces Crisis: 7 Distilleries File for Bankruptcy Amid Historic Drop in Consumption

The American alcohol industry is grappling with severe financial headwinds as 2025 comes to a close, marked by a wave of bankruptcies and the lowest consumer drinking rates recorded in nearly a century.

As of late December, seven major distilleries have filed for bankruptcy protection. The most recent filing occurred on December 22 with Ohio-based A.M. Scott Distillery seeking Chapter 11 protection. This follows a string of similar filings throughout the year, including:

May: JJ Pfister Distilling Co. (Sacramento, California) and Devils River Distillery (San Antonio, Texas)

March: Boston Harbor Distillery (Boston, Massachusetts) and Lee Spirits Co. (Monument, Colorado)

Jim Beam, which produces one of America’s most iconic bourbon whiskies, announced last week that it is halting production at its main distillery in Kentucky for all of 2026. The distillery produces about a third of the company’s annual whiskey output, according to the New York Times, producing famous bourbons like Knob Creek, Baker’s, Booker’s and Basil Hayden’s.
