Texas bowl opt outs: Longhorns, Michigan reckon with new reality
Interim Michigan coach Biff Poggi isn’t shrugging his shoulders with indifference as he prepares his Wolverines to play Texas football in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve, but he’s leery enough to know some of his players are.
Speaking on a recent episode of "The Stampede" podcast, Poggi estimated that up to 25 Wolverines could decide against suiting up against the Longhorns. This is, of course, an extreme case. Michigan — which recently fired its coach, Sherrone Moore, following a scandal that resulted in trespassing and stalking charges against him — is poorly positioned to push back against the diminishing importance, to some programs, of bowl games.
Justice Haynes not with Michigan football for first bowl practice
All signs point to star Michigan football running back Justice Haynes not playing for the Wolverines in the Citrus Bowl against Texas in Orlando, Florida, on Wednesday, Dec. 31 (3 p.m., ABC).
As the Wolverines started their first bowl practice in Winter Garden, Florida, Haynes was not with the team, though a program spokesperson told the Free Press he's expected to fly down and join the team later. He has not 100% been ruled out, but the likelihood of him suiting up appears low.
In addition, the Wolverines also will likely be without a third captain, as linebacker Ernest Hausmann is still dealing with a personal issue and is not with the team, Michigan said.

Michigan will play in one final football game in 2025, as the Wolverines will take on the Texas Longhorns in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve (3 p.m., ABC).
The team will be without at least three players, as Derrick Moore, Jaishawn Barham and Giovanni El-Hadi are all skipping the game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Speaking to the media on Monday, interim head coach Biff Poggi didn’t think anyone else on the team would opt out of the game. However, his tune changed quite a bit just two days later, as he speculated on a Texas-based podcast called “The Stampede” that he may be down even more guys than that.
