Mets Interested In Austin Hays

The Mets have interest in free agent outfielder Austin Hays, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Hays was previously connected to the Royals but that was before Kansas City signed Lane Thomas and acquired Isaac Collins. They are reportedly still exploring the outfield market but might have less urgency in that pursuit now.

For the Mets, adding to the outfield seems like an inevitability. They had nine players take more than one plate appearance as an outfielder in 2025. Seven of them are gone. Cedric Mullins, Starling Marte, Jesse Winker, Jose Siri and José Azócar became free agents at season’s end. This offseason, Brandon Nimmo was traded to the Rangers and Jeff McNeil to the Athletics.

New York has discussed outfielder Austin Hays “internally and have some interest,” The Post’s Jon Heyman reported Tuesday.

The 30-year-old Hays is coming off a bounce-back 2025 in which he hit .266 with a .768 OPS across 103 games with the Reds. It came one year after Hays finished 2024 with a 98 OPS+ — two points below league average — between the Orioles and Phillies.

What makes Hays intriguing is his ability to hit lefties, as he had a .319/.400/.549 slash line in 105 plate appearances against southpaws last season.

Mets Rumors: Mets have some interest in outfielder Austin Hays

The Mets continue exploring the outfield market as they look to bolster their offense.

The Mets are reportedly interested in free agent left fielder Austin Hays, according to Jon Heyman. The team is discussing the outfielder internally as they look to bolster their lineup.

Hays, an eight-year veteran who has bounced around between the Orioles, Phillies, and, most recently, the Reds, is coming off a year in which he slashed .266/.315/.453 (.768 OPS) with 15 homers, 60 runs scored, 64 runs batted in, and a 105 wRC+ in 102 games. He finished 2025 with a 1.2 fWAR which, all in all, was a nice bounce back after he struggled in 2024 (97 wRC+, 0.2 fWAR in 85 games). The 2023 All-Star has played all three outfield positions in his career, but he solely played left field in 2025 and did not spend any time in center or right.
