Tanev to return for Maple Leafs in matinee against Penguins
The Toronto Maple Leafs will get a much-needed addition to their lineup on Tuesday as defenceman Chris Tanev is set to make his return after missing almost two months with an unspecified injury.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube made the announcement when speaking to reporters after practice before the game.
Tanev has two assists in eight games this season, as the 16-year veteran has missed two separate stints with different injuries. His most recent injury came on a hit from behind by Matvei Michkov against the Philadelphia Flyers on Nov. 1.
The seemingly mundane hit left Tanev lying on the ice for minutes, before he was finally stretchered off. That game was his first back after he missed four games due to a concussion earlier in October.
Toronto Maple Leafs Activate Chris Tanev
After nearly two months, the Toronto Maple Leafs are returning a solid defenseman to the lineup. The Maple Leafs announced that they’ve activated defenseman Chris Tanev from the long-term injured reserve.
It was the second stint on the sidelines for Tanev this season. On October 21st, the 36-year-old blueliner suffered a concussion, but returned relatively soon after on November 1st. Unfortunately, in that game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Tanev suffered a scary-looking injury after taking a hit from Matvei Michkov. After spending the night in the hospital, Tanev has been on the LTIR ever since.
He’s only skated in eight games this season for the Maple Leafs despite the pair of injuries. He’s been relatively solid in those appearances, registering two assists and a +5 rating while averaging 17:20 of ice time. Still, it’s not enough of a sample size to judge whether or not Toronto will get the same version of Tanev they got last season.

Chris Tanev Returns To Maple Leafs' Lineup In Final Game Before Holiday Break Against Penguins
The Toronto Maple Leafs are getting Chris Tanev back for their final game ahead of the holiday break.
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube confirmed the news on Tuesday afternoon, two hours before puck drop against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Tanev has been out since Nov. 1 versus the Philadelphia Flyers after leaving the game on a stretcher following an awkward hit from Matvei Michkov.
The 36-year-old has been skating with the team for a few weeks, but didn't practice fully with the team in a regular jersey until Dec. 15.
"It's a very fluid situation here, so we're going to sort of go day by day, see how things are progressing here," Tanev said after that practice. "But, as I said, really happy to be out there with the team and be a full participant in practice."
