Interview: NeoBards Talks Silent Hill f Development, Team Origins and Next Steps

It's no secret that I'm a massive Silent Hill fan, with Silent Hill f being my latest and greatest obsession since its release. Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing NeoBards, the studio behind Silent Hill f, to learn more about what went into its creation.

Not only this, but we chatted a bit about NeoBards itself, including how it came to be and where they want to go next. For a young and relatively new studio, not only was it enlightening to learn, but also inspiring to aspiring developers, no matter where they began.

There are so many little details that are easy to miss in Silent Hill f if you don't have a keen eye — in true Silent Hill fashion.

Silent Hill f Developers Reveal How Fictional Town of Ebisugaoka Was Formed During Development

A large part of the horror behind Silent Hill f comes from its setting—the fictional town of Ebisugaoka. In a new interview with GamesRadar, studio NeoBards has revealed that the town largely took shape over the course of development through discussions between it, Konami, and writer Ryukishi07. In this interview, director Al Yang said that the studio’s pitch to Konami for Silent Hill f would have to ensure “the story would undoubtedly feel like a ‘Ryukishi07 work’”.

As for the town itself, lead level designer Kaiyu Chang spoke about her experience with reading the initial draft of the game’s main script, and how the story at the time strongly resonated with her owing to the themes of constraints placed on women in society as well as the expectations that arise from this.

Silent Hill f writer Ryukishi07 shares what he hopes you learn from his take on the horror series

Truth be told, I haven't played all that many games this year, who has the time! There was one I couldn't miss out on, however, which was Silent Hill f, the first properly new entry in the series for many years, and one with some pedigree behind it, Higurashi and Umineko writer Ryukishi07. I ended up reviewing it for this here site, and liked it very much then, and perhaps more now. There were some great lessons to be learned, and in a recent interview, Ryukishi07 put some of those lessons into succinct, quite lovely words.

Speaking to GamesRadar, the writer spoke of how each of the horror game's characters, not just protagonist Hinako, but her parents, her friends, and the mysterious Fox Mask "may have had their own hell. Please do not forget that, or the fact that Hinako was oblivious to those hells, as she was too consumed by her own personal hell to notice." He continued to note how your own personal hell is "a world of solitude that no one else can perceive, but please do not fall into the trap of assuming that others around you have no hell of their own."
