Stage, screen, social media: Burna Boy’s Denver show shows fans hold the reins

When Burna Boy stepped onto the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre stage in mid-November, the night was expected to mark a triumphant opening to his No Sign of Weakness North American tour.

Instead, a brief but tense moment during the performance would ignite a global conversation, reshaping the early narrative of the tour and raising questions about the delicate balance between artistes, audiences and online scrutiny.

Midway through the set, Burna Boy paused, pointed toward a couple in the front section, and instructed security to remove them.

“Please take her the f*ck home. Fast, fast. Take her home. I’m not doing no more songs until you take her home,” he said.

Nigerian star Burna Boy's US tour hangs in the balance

Grammy-winning Afrobeats star Burna Boy's ‘No Sign of Weakness’ tour in the United States and Canada has hit a major snag, with the abrupt cancellation of shows in multiple cities.

Ticketmaster, the primary ticketing platform, listed "low ticket sales" as the reason for cancelling Burna Boy’s scheduled performance in Minneapolis and Chicago, but some industry experts claim the move follows a massive public relations crisis stemming from an incident at the Nigerian artist’s recent concert in Denver city.

The controversy ignited when Burna Boy stopped his performance at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in November to publicly eject a woman from the audience after she was seen sleeping.

Burna Boy, ‘the Sleeping Fan’, And The Backlash

It’s no news that in the last few weeks, Burna Boy’s recent decision to pause his show mid-performance and send out a fan he believed was sleeping sparked one of the loudest conversations in Afrobeats this year. The video which went viral on social media triggered widespread criticism, with many questioning what performers owe their audiences.

Although it might not be his first backlash in the industry, it might just be the one that forces him to work better on his audience management skills. Following his outburst with a ‘sleeping fan’ in Colorado, Grammy-winning Afrobeats star, Burna Boy has come under serious fire from fans worldwide.
