Lifted by VIPs, community, this thankful Detroit duo continues to rise
Dan Gilbert is generally a man who needs no introduction, particularly in Detroit spaces. And that has been true for quite some time.
However, in 2016, when Detroiter Lauren Bradford was about to sit across a chess board from Gilbert for a friendly match to be played within a landmark downtown Detroit office building, the precocious middle school student received a briefing about the famous businessman and developer.
“All the people around me (gathered at One Campus Martius, formerly known as the Compuware Building) were excited and telling me how big of an opportunity it was,” recalls Bradford, who, at the time, was attending University Prep Science and Math Middle School. “I was just a kid who liked to play chess against anyone. I didn’t know who that man was, but I knew I had to beat him.”
Dan Gilbert helped young Detroiters think bigger, here’s why they still thank him years later
Dan Gilbert transformed Detroit from struggling city to thriving hub by teaching young Detroiters to think bigger. His mentorship philosophy went beyond handouts, creating pathways for youth to believe in themselves. Here’s why those he guided remain grateful.
When Detroit filed for bankruptcy in 2013, the city needed more than money. It needed someone to believe in its future. Dan Gilbert, founder of what became Rocket Mortgage, did exactly that. He invested billions into downtown, but his real impact came through inspiring young people to dream differently about their city.
Gilbert’s philosophy wasn’t about charity. Instead, he created an environment where young Detroiters could see opportunity where others saw decline. Through speeches, mentorship programs, and direct involvement, he showed the next generation that Detroit was a place worth building something meaningful.

Dishonest Detroit councilwoman does her part to launder Dan Gilbert's reputation
Fake progressive Gabriela Santiago-Romero, a nominal Democrat who nominally represents Detroit’s City Council District 6, does good things sometimes. Like, last week, for example, as detailed in her Friday newsletter.
On Monday [November 17], Team GSR [the councilwoman and her staffers] partnered with Perry Outreach Center and Bedrock to purchase turkeys for D[istrict] 6 residents. In total, 82 turkeys were distributed to families in need, ensuring they have a healthy and filling meal on the table for the holiday.
We are grateful for Bedrock's generosity and especially to the Perry Outreach Center for their commitment to our communities and residents. In these challenging times, collaboration and partnership will be essential to creating and sustaining communities of care.
