Warriors G Steph Curry and his advisers âbecame frustrated by what they viewed as underinvestmentâ in Under Armour, leading to their mutual decision to end the partnership, as the divisionâs sales were not âmeeting the companyâs or Curryâs expectations,â according to sources cited by Bhasin & Williams of BLOOMBERG NEWS. Sources noted that one âsore pointâ for Curry was the attempt last year to recruit Fever G Caitlin Clark to join his brand. He and the company âpursued the phenom, but Under Armourâs offer trailed the total value of Nikeâs pitch.â As Under Armour founder & CEO Kevin Plank returned to the helm early in 2024, a source said that Curry âhoped that Plank would invest more in his line.â According to the separation agreement, Curry and Under Armour âhave unfinished business.â The company will âdebut the final Curry shoe in February.â Curry now âpresents a rare opportunityâ for the worldâs largest sportswear companies. With a âpotential partnership up for grabs,â industry sources say that the biggest basketball brands, including Nike, Adidas and Puma, are âsure to approach him.â A source noted that Curry has not âdiscussed a potential new deal yet with any sneaker companies.â Any future discussions âmight be awkward for Nike, which had bungled a past deal with Curry.â Nike, however, remains âdominant in basketball and has signed many of the sportâs top athletes to its brands.â Meanwhile, Adidas has âmade inroads on the courtâ (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 11/21).
