She was moments away from giving birth. The hospital discharged her

Alena Wells could have entered the world surrounded by her family and medical professionals.

Instead, she was born on Nov. 16 in the front seat of a Chevrolet Silverado as her father, Leon Wells, rushed from one Indiana hospital to another.

Wells was driving away from Franciscan Health Crown Point, the hospital that he says discharged his wife while she was in active labor. His mother-in-law filmed the exit in astonishment.

Franciscan Health President and CEO Raymond Grady has acknowledged that Alena's mother, Mercedes, was discharged just moments before she gave birth. Grady said a doctor and nurse lost their job; the hospital publicly apologized; and Grady promised policy changes and cultural competency training for all labor and delivery staff.

Doctor, nurse who discharged woman in active labor minutes before birth fired

Parents describe how they delivered their newborn baby in their truck after they said the hospital they were in sent them home despite being in active labor.

A doctor and nurse who discharged a pregnant woman in active labor from an Indiana hospital just minutes before she said she gave birth in a vehicle on the side of the road have been fired following an internal investigation, the hospital's CEO announced Friday.

Franciscan Health Crown Point President and CEO Raymond Grady said viral video of the situation was "difficult to watch."

"We failed to listen to Mrs. Wells’ concerns. As an experienced mother who publicly acknowledged having previously given birth at our hospital with a positive experience, she knew something was not right," Grady said in a statement. "We must fix what failed in our hospital so that no one experiences what happened to Mercedes Wells."

Mercedes Wells gives birth on side of road after being discharged from Franciscan Health Crown Point, Indiana: family

CROWN POINT, Ind. (WLS) — One couple's relatives say while they are thrilled to welcome a happy, healthy baby, their experience was not one they want for any expectant parents.

Breathing through her contractions, Mercedes Wells was wheeled out of Franciscan Health Crown Point Hospital Sunday.

Her family said the hospital staff had just discharged the mother of multiple children, telling her to go home and wait for her labor to progress.

Cherise Thompson says she knew her sister-in-law had been admitted to the northwest Indiana hospital but did not expect what she would hear next.

"Sunday morning, I woke up to frantic texts from my mother saying, 'Call me as soon as you wake up,'" Cherise said. "My mother was screaming like, 'Your brother just delivered his baby! Your brother just delivered the baby!' And I'm like, 'What are you talking about?!'"
