The Los Angeles Lakers are reorganizing their basketball operations department and have fired executives Joey and Jesse Buss from their respective front office positions, effective immediately, the brothers told ESPN's Shams Charania on Thursday.
The Lakers also parted with much of their scouting department beyond the Buss brothers on Thursday, sources told ESPN.
Joey and Jesse Buss have had key Lakers scouting roles for the past decade, helping find players such as Austin Reaves, Alex Caruso, Kyle Kuzma, Jordan Clarkson, Larry Nance Jr. and Max Christie.
Joey and Jesse Buss fired by Lakers after $10 billion sale as brothers hint at family drama
After a record-breaking sale of the Lakers at a $10 billion valuation, it appears new majority owner Mark Walter is moving further away from the Buss family.
Brothers Joey and Jesse Buss told ESPN on Thursday that they’ve been fired from the Lakers after 20 years in the organization formerly owned by their dad, Jerry.
Joey was the Lakers’ alternate governor and vice president of research and development, while Jesse was an assistant general manager.
The two indicated they were not happy with how their exits were handled.
“We are extremely honored to have been part of this organization for the last 20 seasons,” the brothers told ESPN in a statement. “Thank you to Laker Nation for embracing our family every step of the way. We wish things could be different with the way our time ended with the team. At times like this we wish we could ask our Dad what he would think about it all.”

In a blockbuster move last summer, the Los Angeles Lakers' majority ownership was sold from Jeanie Buss to Mark Walter.
It instantly became the largest sale of a sports franchise in history, totalling over $10B.
For a franchise that has been owned by the same family since the 1980s, the move was quite shocking. The new owner of the team, however, was no surprise at all.
Mark Walter might not be one of the most recognizable names in sports, but he's certainly heavily involved. Walter owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Sparks and a minority stake in Chelsea FC. Walter also owns an entire professional women's hockey league (PWHL) and the soon-to-be-introduced Cadillac F1 team.
