Gleyber Torres accepts $22 million qualifying offer, returning to Detroit Tigers in 2026

Gleyber Torres is returning to the Detroit Tigers for the 2026 season.

The 28-year-old second baseman accepted the $22.03 million qualifying offer from the Tigers on Tuesday, Nov. 18, before the 4 p.m. deadline, pulling his name out of free agency, according to a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it's not official. He has opted for a one-year deal rather than testing the market for a multi-year contract.

Four of the 13 players who received qualifying offers accepted: Torres, Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff, Chicago Cubs left-hander Shota Imanaga and New York Yankees center fielder Trent Grisham.

Gleyber Torres To Accept Qualifying Offer

Infielder Gleyber Torres is going to accept the qualifying offer from the Tigers. Jon Heyman of The New York Post was among those to report the news. Torres will return to Detroit on a one-year deal worth $22.025MM.

Definitely higher than the AAV he’d get on the open market. The hope is he’d gain more in total value, which was likely, but he now removes the QO and is free to become a free agent next season without compensation attached. Just in time for the lock out!

Idk, with labor question marks on the horizon I was thinking Gleyber and others might just take a multi-year offer and let it ride. Cashing out for 1yr remains a reality!

DETROIT — Tuesday afternoon, we will know whether Gleyber Torres accepts the $22.025 million qualifying offer the Detroit Tigers extended to him this offseason. We will also learn which players the Tigers plan to protect on the 40-man roster. (Thayron Liranzo and Hao-Yu Lee are the only sure things, though a few others have compelling cases.)

Then, perhaps, we will slowly move into the real stuff: the moves, decisions and non-decisions that will determine the makeup of the 2026 Tigers.

Even if Tarik Skubal stays put rather than becoming part of a franchise-altering trade, this is a fascinating time in the Tigers’ competitive cycle. The decisions are harder and more complicated than they have been in recent memory.
