Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase has been suspended one game without pay for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Jalen Ramsey, the league announced Monday.

Chase is appealing the suspension, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. The appeal will be heard and ruled upon by either Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster or Jordy Nelson, the hearing officers jointly appointed by the NFL and NFL Players Association.

If the suspension is upheld, he would miss his team's upcoming game against the New England Patriots in Week 12. The incident occurred in Cincinnati's 34-12 loss to the Steelers on Sunday. Video from Cincinnati's WXIX-TV showed Chase clearly spitting in Ramsey's direction, which prompted Ramsey to throw a punch at Chase.

Jordy Nelson will hear Ja’Marr Chase’s appeal of his suspension

Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has appealed his one-game suspension for spitting on Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports that former Packers receiver Jordy Nelson, a jointly appointed NFL-NFLPA appeals officer, will hear Chase’s case. Derrick Brooks and Ramon Foster are the other appeals officers.

As it stands, Chase will miss Sunday’s game against the Patriots.

Ramsey was ejected after throwing a punch at Chase, but officials missed Chase spitting at Ramsey. Video from WXIX-TV in Cincinnati clearly shows Chase spitting, something Chase denied doing during postgame interviews before the video was posted on social media.

Steelers' Jalen Ramsey says Ja'Marr Chase spit on him; Bengals WR denies accusation

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey told reporters on Sunday that Bengals star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase spit on him during the second half of his team's win over Cincinnati, which led to an ensuing altercation that resulted in Ramsey's ejection.

"I never opened my mouth to that guy," Chase said, via The Athletic. "I didn't spit on nobody."

Footage of the incident, however, appears to show that Chase did, in fact, spit on Ramsey.

Ramsey and Chase got into a verbal altercation at the beginning of the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's eventual 34-12 win on Sunday at Acrisure Stadium. The altercation quickly became physical with Ramsey taking a swipe at Chase's helmet and grabbing his facemask before players from both teams separated the two.
