The Kessler twins — renowned German sisters who reached international stardom for their post-war entertainment in the 1950s and 1960s — ended their lives together.

On Monday, Nov. 17, Alice and Ellen Kessler died at age 89 in their home near Munich after choosing medical aid in dying, German newspaper Bild reports.

According to the outlet, the sisters “no longer wanted to live” and “they had chosen to end their lives together.” Police were reportedly notified after the process was completed.

Beloved TV twins who performed with Frank Sinatra, others, die at 89

Alice and Ellen Kessler, the twin sisters who captivated audiences across postwar Europe with their synchronized performances on Italian television, have died at 89.

Authorities confirmed the deaths on Monday, after responding to a call at the sisters’ home in Grünwald, Germany, where they lived in adjoining flats separated by a sliding wall, Parade reports. Officials said no foul play was suspected.

According to German daily Bild, the twins chose medically assisted suicide, which is legal in Germany under strict rules requiring individuals to make the decision of their own free will.

Born in 1936 in Nerchau, the Kessler twins began performing as children with the Leipzig Opera ballet, Parade notes. After leaving East Germany for Düsseldorf in 1952, they toured Europe and the United States, working alongside entertainment legends including Frank Sinatra and Fred Astaire. By 19, they were performing with the Bluebell Girls at the Lido in Paris.
