Titanic passenger's pocket watch expected to fetch £1m at auction

A gold pocket watch recovered from the body of one of the richest passengers on the Titanic is expected to fetch £1m ($1.3m) at auction.

Isidor Straus and his wife Ida were among the more than 1,500 people who died when the vessel travelling from Southampton to New York sank after hitting an iceberg on 14 April 1912.

His body was recovered from the Atlantic days after the disaster and among his possessions was an 18 carat gold Jules Jurgensen pocket watch that will go under the hammer on 22 November.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge, of Henry Aldridge & Son in Wiltshire, told Ben Prater on BBC Radio Wiltshire: "With the watch, we are retelling Isidor's story. It's a phenomenal piece of memorabilia."

Titanic passenger’s rare gold pocket watch could become priciest artifact ever sold

A gold pocket watch recovered from one of the richest passengers aboard the Titanic may become the most expensive artifact from the tragedy ever sold, according to experts.

The watch belonged to Isidor Straus, co-owner of Macy’s department store, who was aboard the ill-fated ship in April 1912, along with his wife, Ida Straus. The couple were returning to New York from a trip to Europe.

“One account stated they were last seen sitting on the deck arm in arm, although in [the film] ‘Titanic’ they were depicted lying side by side on the bed in their stateroom,” according to auctioneer Andrew Aldridge.

Watch owned by Titanic couple expected to sell for more than £800k

A gold pocket watch recovered from an elderly couple who drowned during the sinking of the Titanic is expected to fetch at least £800,000 when it is sold at auction.

First class passengers Isidor and Ida Straus were portrayed in James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster Titanic movie as the couple cradling each other as the ship sinks in April 1912, costing 1,500 lives.

The 18-carat Jules Jurgensen engraved watch was recovered from the body of Mr Straus along with other personal effects and returned to his family.

He had been given the watch in 1888 as a gift for his 43rd birthday – the same year he became a partner in New York department store Macy’s.
