Earthquake storm hits Türkiye as expert warn of possible magnitude 7 quake in Aegean Sea
Residents of Sindirgi, Balikesir, were shaken again early Monday as a series of earthquakes struck the region, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The first tremor hit at 01:06 local time with a magnitude of 4.5 at a depth of 11 kilometers. A second 4.5-magnitude quake followed at 05:48, this time at 13.25 kilometers deep. The region continued to experience a flurry of aftershocks: 3.9 at 5:50 a.m., 3.6 at 5:52 a.m., 4.4 at 9:41 a.m., and 3.7 at 10:02 a.m.
Experts describe the activity as an “earthquake storm,” an intense period of repeated seismic events.
Seismologist Professor Dr. Suleyman Pampal explains to Turkish news channel CNN Turk that daily minor quakes are part of a larger tectonic process, with magnitudes mostly between 4 and 5.
Four consecutive quakes strike Sındırgı amid ‘seismic storm’
Four consecutive earthquakes hit the western province of Balıkesir’s Sındırgı district early Nov. 13, reigniting high concern in an area already stressed by months of relentless seismic activity.
The first quake, measuring 4.7 in magnitude, struck at 6:16 a.m. local time, followed by two others of 4.2 magnitudes within five minutes and a magnitude 4.0 less than two hours later. Tremors were felt in nearby provinces, but no casualties or major damage were reported.
The latest earthquakes come amid months of heightened seismic activity in the region.
On Aug. 10, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the town, killing one person and damaging multiple structures. Another powerful quake of the same magnitude hit the district on Oct. 27, after which the area was declared a disaster zone.

4 earthquakes in a row shake Sındırgı, epicentre of a persistent seismic swarm
Four consecutive earthquakes shook the Sındırgı district of northwestern Turkey’s Balıkesir province in the early hours of 13 November, rekindling concern in an area that has been subjected to continuous tremors for months now due to what experts call a seismic swarm: an abnormal activity that has scientists worried.
A seismic swarm is a series of earthquakes of low or moderate magnitude that occur in the same area and in a short period of time, without there being a main earthquake that triggers them. Unlike aftershocks, these tremors usually have multiple nearby epicentres and irregular activity that can last for days or even months. Experts consider them an indication of accumulated stresses in the earth’s crust, and they sometimes precede a major earthquake.
