The Mega Millions jackpot shot up to $754 million this week — the ninth-largest prize in the lottery game’s history since it began in 2002. The largest Mega Millions jackpot was $1.6 billion in 2023.
The last jackpot claimed was in Virginia in June, when a lucky ticket holder won the $348 million prize. Drawings are held every Tuesday and Friday, and the $5 tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
While a sizable tax bill would knock down the jackpot’s amount considerably, we took a look and opted to use $754 million to illustrate the full scope of the prize.

The Mega Millions lottery jackpot was an estimated $754 million with a cash option of $352.8 million for Friday, Oct. 31 drawing, according to the Mega Millions website.
It is the ninth largest Mega Millions ever and the 19th largest US lottery jackpot (see lists below).
The jackpot was last won when a lottery player in Virginia won a $348 million Mega Millions jackpot on June 27.
Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot is at $400 million with a cash option of $189 million, according to the Powerball website.
