Boca Raton teen helps several people stranded in flash flood

BOCA RATON, Fla. — A Boca Raton teen is being credited for helping rescue stranded drivers after a flash flood hit the area Sunday night.

Thomas Ruzzano, 18, was at the movie theater at Mizner Park with his girlfriend when they heard thunderstorms.

“During the movie, we just heard lightning, pouring the whole movie and then on the way out, we’re in a flood,” said Ruzzano. “We were going down the road, and we just see cars backed up. The whole roundabout, the whole entire garage, everything, even the bathrooms in the movie theaters flooded.”

The flash flood brought strong winds and lightning, leaving sections of the city submerged under water. According to Doppler Radar, Boca Raton experienced an estimated 8 inches of rain Sunday.

Record rainfall in West Palm Beach and flooding shuts down Boca Raton Airport overnight

The skies opened and bellowed for hours with torrential thunderstorms shutting down the Boca Raton Airport and setting a record in West Palm Beach where 2.37 inches of rain fell in a 24-hour period beginning early on Oct. 26.

Stoked by a gooey warm ribbon of air stalled over Central Florida and a knotty trough of energy traveling fast and high overhead, the storms that convened along Palm Beach County’s coast triggered flash-flood warnings that cautioned 3 to 5 inches of rain had fallen in Boca Raton in a single hour with up to 2 more inches expected before midnight approached.

The warning was later slapped with the “considerable” label — a rare escalation issued when flash flooding is unusually severe.

Flooded roads, abandoned cars, & more rain: Boca Raton grapples with overnight storm

BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — A night of torrential rain turned Boca Raton’s streets into rivers, leaving behind stranded vehicles, clogged storm drains, and a city scrambling to recover before the next wave of storms hits.

According to CBS12 Stormtrac Meteorologists, significant rainfall fell in a short period, with parts of southern Palm Beach County receiving between 5 to 7 inches, and isolated areas seeing even higher amounts — all within just a few hours Sunday night. The deluge shattered daily rainfall records for October 26 in nearby cities: West Palm Beach recorded 2.37 inches, and Vero Beach saw 3.77 inches, both setting new highs.

The City of Boca Raton said its crews worked through Sunday night and into Monday morning to assess the damage from what officials are calling an “unprecedented weather event.”
