A Common Complaint Against Halloween III Is Technically Wrong

After the events of 1981's "Halloween II" saw Michael Myers being burnt to a crisp, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill wanted to take the series in a bold new direction. Subsequent films under the "Halloween" moniker would be their own horror anthologies, with each installment revolving around the spirit of the season. "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" was ready to go the following year, but, unfortunately, it would be the first and last time this franchise tried something like this. It's a shame because the Tommy Lee Wallace-directed entry is among the best of all 13 "Halloween" movies, and even more singular as its own thing.

'Halloween III': Actor Tom Atkins Has a Perfect Response for the Haters

The legacy of the Halloween movies has had a massive impact on pop culture, the horror genre, and cinematic history as a whole. From introducing audiences to the masked terror of Michael Myers to defining the modern slasher blueprint, the franchise reshaped how fear was portrayed on screen and inspired countless imitators, reboots, and tributes.

But the same couldn’t be said about Halloween III: Season of the Witch, or at least when it came out. At the time of the release, fans of the franchise who wanted to see more of The Shape were disappointed to discover that not only was Mr. Myers not a part of the third outing, but there was chatter that he might not return.

Sorry. This isn’t going to be an article bashing Halloween III: Season of the Witch. I know it’s now the in vogue thing to praise this film for being an underrated horror classic. Just like it was the hot thing to do, to bash the film for being a Halloween film without Michael Myers. I really enjoy the film, but this isn’t going to be a review. Today as part of Fright-A-Thon, we’re going to look at the origins of Halloween III and the reasons why a film like this should have worked. But don’t fret, if you’re a fan of the film, you’ll be able to hear my thoughts on it throughout.
