Bookstores Set to Close at Two of Four Los Rios Campuses
Come July 1 2026, students at Cosumnes River College and Folsom Lake College will need to start obtaining their books, testing supplies and school merchandise from other sources, according to Gabe Ross, Los Rios’ chief strategy and communications officer.
Of the four campuses comprising the Los Rios Community College District, two of the physical bookstores located on the campuses are in the process of closing down. With CRC and FLC closing their bookstores, American River College and Sacramento City College bookstores will be left to take up any additional foot traffic from the other campuses—something Ross said the Los Rios district wasn’t concerned about.
College plans to close campus bookstore to redirect to online sales
Cosumnes River College is formalizing plans to close down its campus bookstore, due to the majority of students utilizing the Zero Textbook Cost program, said Theresa Tena, vice president of administrative services.
The Hawks Nest College Store is one of the lowest financially performing bookstores in the Los Rios Community College District, with the majority of students using Open Educational Resources and ZTC materials, Tena said.
Other campuses in the district, including American River College and Sacramento City College, will keep their bookstores open. Folsom Lake College will be closing its bookstore along with CRC, said Academic Senate President and RTVF Professor Lauren Wagner.

Two Los Rios Campuses to Close Bookstores
The Los Rios Community College District is set to undergo significant changes in its bookstore services. Starting July 1, 2026, Cosumnes River College (CRC) and Folsom Lake College (FLC) will close their bookstores. Students at these campuses will need to find alternative sources for textbooks, testing supplies, and school merchandise.
Gabe Ross, the chief strategy and communications officer for Los Rios, confirmed the closures. After the transition, only the bookstores at American River College (ARC) and Sacramento City College (SCC) will remain operational. These institutions are expected to accommodate any increased foot traffic from the closures.
This decision is largely influenced by a shift in student preferences. According to Ross, many students are opting for online classes post-COVID-19. Additionally, numerous faculty members are increasingly utilizing free online resources. This trend has contributed to declining revenues at the physical bookstores, making it unsustainable to operate all four locations.
