Joel Embiid will play in Sixers’ opener vs. Celtics; Paul George to sit out

Embiid will play a regular-season game for the first time since Feb. 22. He has had two surgeries on his left knee in the last 14 months.

BOSTON — Joel Embiid will play for the 76ers in the season opener against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night at TD Garden.

As expected, Paul George, Trendon Watford, and Jared McCain will be sidelined.

The game will mark Embiid’s first regular-season contest since he faced the Brooklyn Nets in a 105-103 loss on Feb. 22. Embiid played in just 19 games last season before undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on April 11. It was his second surgery on the knee in 14 months and the third in nine years.

Full injury report for Paul George, 76ers vs. Celtics on opening night

The Philadelphia 76ers are preparing to board a plane and head up to New England to take on the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night to open the 2025-26 season. It offers a clean slate for everybody as they look to erase the memory of a painful 2024-25 season in which nothing went right for them.

One of those things that never went right for the Sixers was health. Expected to seriously contend for a championship, Philadelphia was never able to get right at all. The Big 3 of Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey played a grand total of 18 games together and finished only 15 of them. The Sixers went 7-8 in those 15 games in 2024-25.

George out, Embiid off the injury report for Sixers' opener against Celtics

Joel Embiid was absent from the Sixers’ opening-night injury report Tuesday.

After playing 19 games last year in a season derailed by left knee problems, Embiid should be available for the Sixers’ opener Wednesday night against the Celtics. He’s been a regular practice participant this preseason and posted 14 points, eight assists and seven rebounds over 19 minutes in the team’s exhibition finale vs. the Timberwolves.

The Sixers ruled out Paul George (left knee surgery recovery), Trendon Watford (left hamstring tightness) and Jared McCain (right thumb surgery recovery).

Though George and Watford have taken part in recent practices, neither played during the preseason. Following an offseason procedure on his left knee, George has appeared to make steady progress. He’s now able to fully participate in practices, including 5-on-5 live action.
