Vita Vea Split Double-Teams with Disruptive Presence Against San Francisco

The Buccaneers defense runs through nose tackle Vita Vea. Teams have all but abandoned leaving Vea one-on-one with his brute power. He dominates the line of scrimmage and wreaks havoc on offenses, overwhelming linemen in the trenches with ease.

His stats may not be indicative of his presence in Week Six but Vea spearheaded the defensive effort at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday in the NFC clash. Vea was awarded a half sack on the day against San Francisco, tying Jason Pierre-Paul and Brad Culpepper (33.0) for the ninth most sacks in franchise history.

For a nose tackle, a position that customarily operates as a two-gapper holding the line of scrimmage, that feat is a rarity and a testament to Vea's athleticism. Per Next Gen Stats, Vea generated five quarterback pressures while facing double-teams on 69.7% of dropbacks against the Niners. Despite the double-teams, Vea still generated two pressures and 0.5 sacks when doubled. With Vea on the field, the Bucs allowed only 36 yards on 14 rushes between the tackles (2.6 yards per carry).

Bucs DT Vita Vea a force Lions must contend with: 'Put two back braces on'

Allen Park — Detroit Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley spent a decade as a player in the NFL, making him uniquely qualified to relate with members of his position group. After 123 career starts on the interior, he knows what it's like to battle stout defensive tackles.

His advice to center Graham Glasgow, who is tasked with slowing Vita Vea (6-foot-4, 347 pounds) in Monday night's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers? "Put two back braces on."

Vita Vea Lives In Dan Campbell’s Head

Joe loved the angst in tough-guy Lions head coach Dan Campbell’s voice when answering a question about Vita Vea this week.

Joe is confident saying Vea is having the best season of his eight-year career. The consistency has been better and he’s just been ferocious.

Look at his half-sack Sunday against the 49ers. On a three-man Bucs rush, Vea knifed through his double team and blew up the play.

“Look, the size is one thing, but his quickness to get off the ball, he’s got explosiveness and he’s got really good feet,” Campbell said of Vea. “You know, and when you’re a man that big and you can move like he moves, then you gotta do everything right [against him], man. You gotta play with leverage. You gotta have the get-off of your life. We have double teams; we gotta be able to fit the double teams together. You’re off just a little bit and he will split you. He’ll crease you. He’ll get an edge. He’ll do that in the pass game, too. He’ll swim sometimes, you know. So if you’re not locked in and you’re not perfect fundamentally, he’ll get on you. So it’s just another one of those, ‘We gotta be locked in on every stinkin’ play.'”
