Thibaut Courtois accuses La Liga of ‘manipulation’ after protests against Miami game not broadcast

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has accused La Liga of “manipulation” after a number of the weekend’s protests against the plan to host Villarreal versus Barcelona in Miami were not broadcast.

Teams staged protests against the plans during the weekend’s La Liga fixtures by not starting play for the opening 15 seconds of matches. The protests were not widely broadcast and The Athletic reported this was after La Liga asked TV companies not to show them, according to multiple people familiar with the request.

On Thursday, La Liga president Javier Tebas wrote a letter, seen by The Athletic, to Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) president David Aganzo, in which he said the planned strike could lead to “unwanted consequences” for players involved.

More criticism has been directed at La Liga following the league's decision to stage a domestic match between Villarreal and in Miami.

The two clubs will play at Hard Rock Stadium on December 20, with Villarreal being the designated home side for the league fixture.

The upcoming match, which was approved by UEFA earlier this month, will be the first ever European league game to be held on foreign soil.

Protests against the decision took place this past weekend at the start of La Liga matches, with players remaining still for the opening 15 seconds of some matches.

Real Madrid Duo Hit Out at Barcelona’s Miami Fixture, ’Formal Protest’ Launched

Real Madrid have filed a formal complaint against La Liga and the Spanish Federation’s decision to host December’s meeting between Barcelona and Villarreal in Miami, a report has revealed.

The ruling has proven incredibly controversial across the top flight and Spain’s Footballers’ Association (AFE) recently organized a protest which saw teams across the division refuse to play for the first 15 seconds of their matches this weekend—including Barcelona themselves.

According to MARCA, Madrid have now ramped up their outcry with a formal report to Spain’s Higher Sports Council (CSD), the government branch responsible for all the country’s sport and the same department that overruled La Liga’s decision not to hand Barcelona midfielder Dani Olmo a new license to continue playing last January.
