‘The Rainmaker’ Stars Answer Our Burning Questions About That Finale

[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for The Rainmaker finale.]

Case closed! There were some big surprises in store in The Rainmaker‘s finale, even for those who might’ve read John Grisham‘s novel of the same name or watched the cinematic adaptation to know how the trial might end. To break down the biggest moments and find out the answer to some of our most burning questions, TV Insider caught up with the cast and creatives to dish on all the spoilers.

First, a brief recap of events. Melvin Pritcher (Dan Fogler), after talking to Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan), agreed to testify in the civil trial against the hospital. After all, he wasn’t going to get out of facing prison time for his crimes, no matter what, but at least this would give him an opportunity to get even with the people responsible for his own mother’s death in the house fire. In his testimony, which was allowed as a rebuttal witness account to the doctor’s cause of death assessment, he admitted to murdering multiple patients, including the son of Rudy’s client. Things went off the rails, though, when he leaped across the room to attack Leo Drummond (John Slattery).

‘The Rainmaker’ Season 1 Ending Explained: Who Died? Who Broke Up? Did Rudy Win the Trial?

The Rainmaker was building up to the trial where Rudy faced off against Leo — but the finale could be divisive for fans looking for a specific ending.

Based on John Grisham's 1995 novel of the same name, The Rainmaker follows young lawyer Rudy (Milo Callaghan), who is fired from his prestigious white-collar firm and signs on with small-time ambulance chaser Bruiser (Lana Parrilla). Rudy subsequently tries to win in court over his former boss. The book was adapted into a movie by Francis Ford Coppola in 1997 starring Mickey Rourke and Matt Damon.

USA Network's version of The Rainmaker showed Rudy nearly losing against Leo (John Slattery) before coming out on top. The rest of the Tinley Britt law firm took a hit with Brad (Wade Briggs) going to prison as the fall guy. Leo's legacy also fell apart as Sarah (Madison Iseman) ended up the only one finding success after the fact.

The Rainmaker season 1 finale recap: Does Rudy win his first case?

Rudy and Leo go head-to-head in court in The Rainmaker season 1 finale. Who will come out on top?

From the beginning, we knew that The Rainmaker could only end with Rudy and Leo going up against each other in court. We didn’t even need the book for that. It did take a turn, when Rudy made a decision that would change the trajectory of the case.

At the end of The Rainmaker season 1, episode 9, Rudy was left with a gift from Prince. He’d held Pritcher down in his basement, allowing Rudy the one thing he needed for his case. Of course, there was a problem of Rudy now knowing that Pritcher had been abducted, and he called Bruiser and Deck for help with this situation.
