‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Sets Extended Break For Main Cast Member: Find Out When They Will Return
SPOILER ALERT: The story includes details about Episode 2202, “We Built This City,” of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy.
EXCLUSIVE: The deadly explosion in the Season 21 finale of Grey’s Anatomy left all of the doctors at Grey Sloan reeling. No one felt the impact more than Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), whose patient Dylan’s mother was responsible for the blast. Not able to cope despite an intervention by Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary), Amelia announced at the end of tonight’s episode that she is taking a sabbatical. (You can read Deadline’s recap here.)
That sets a lengthy hiatus for longtime Grey’s Anatomy series regular cast member Scorsone. According to sources, it will span the next eight episodes, with the actress returning in 2026.
'Grey's Anatomy' Interview: Kelly McCreary on Maggie's Return, Pregnancy News, and Amelia Leaving (Exclusive)
[Warning: The following post contains MAJOR spoilers for Grey’s Anatomy Season 41 Episode 2, “We Built This City.”]
As the rest of the hospital got back to work, welcoming in the new class of interns — albeit, in a surgical wing that was still in shambles — Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) went into a state of near-catatonia over the deadly explosion that her patient’s mother caused. Her spiral was something only her sisters could help with, so in came both Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary) to whisk her away to Mer’s old house while the now-second-years were away.

Grey's Anatomy Recap: Maggie Returns With Shocking News — Plus, Where Is [Spoiler] Going?
After last week's devastating premiere (R.I.P., Monica!), Grey's Anatomy fans were in desperate need of a win, and that's exactly what they got on Thursday with the long-awaited return of Kelly McCreary.
The on-record purpose of Maggie's visit was to support Amelia after losing Monica (whom she accidentally referred to as "Veronica"), which is how most of her time on screen was spent. Heck, if Maggie and Meredith didn't literally pull her out of bed, she'd probably still be there now.
Beyond being distraught over Monica's death, Amelia confessed to her inner circle that she blames herself for the whole situation. "If I had said no to the first surgery, none of this would have happened," she said, but Maggie and Meredith insisted that Amelia isn't the villain in this story. "Complications can happen for any reason," Maggie pointed out. "And sometimes for no reason at all."
