Checking the temperature of the NFL's hottest seats: Barnwell on Mike McDaniel, Justin Fields
Damien Woody and Tedy Bruschi discuss Tua Tagovailoa's frustration and Mike McDaniel's future with the Dolphins. (1:36)
The NFL typically overshadows most other sports stories on Sunday afternoons during the fall, but Penn State's decision to fire coach James Franklin was an exception to that rule. Fifteen days ago, Franklin's Nittany Lions were the No. 3-ranked team in college football. But after three straight losses, the university decided that it was better off paying Franklin a buyout of about $50 million and hiring someone else to run the football program.
With UAB coach Trent Dilfer also getting fired on Sunday, the college football hot seat has officially been turned on. The same is true for the NFL, where the vast majority of the league's teams are now six games into the season. It's tougher for a coach, player or executive to treat a slow start or a rough patch of form like it's a temporary concern this far into the season.

The Titans’ firing of Brian Callahan has kicked off the annual bloodletting. With several clubs’ playoff hopes already in peril, there are toasty seats across the league
The Tennessee Titans’ firing Brian Callahan this week signaled the unofficial start of the coaching carousel.
Six weeks into the season, a league built for parity is finding there is little to go around. Nearly half (14) of the league’s teams this season are two games over .500. Three others have winning records and another three (the Chiefs, Panthers and Commanders) are 3-3 with an upward trajectory.
On the opposite end, six teams are 1-5, with their playoff hopes all but over in October. Only one of those teams (the Saints) has a rookie head coach. Callahan was the first coach to be dismissed, but there are toasty seats across the league.

Dolphins' Mike McDaniel: Tua Tagovailoa's comments 'misguided representation' of player film sessions
The Miami Dolphins are off to a disappointing 1-5 start to the season, but their play on the field is not the only thing under scrutiny heading into Week 7.
A day after Tua Tagovailoa called out attendance at player-only meetings during his postgame news conference, head coach Mike McDaniel publicly rebuffed his franchise quarterback after having the chance to hear Tagovailoa's remarks.
"After a loss as the franchise quarterback, that's not the forum to displace that," McDaniel said on Monday. "I think he knows that now. I do believe there was no ill intention, but you're talking about a misguided representation of player-orchestrated film sessions."
