Carson City area weather: Valley rain, Sierra snow prompt advisory for Tahoe, warning for Mono County

A storm is expected to bring low elevation rain and high elevation snow to the region Monday through Tuesday night, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

A Winter Weather Advisory had been issued for the Lake Tahoe Basin while a Winter Storm Warning has been issued for Mono County in California, according to the latest NWS forecast discussion.

According to the advisory, heavy snow is expected above 7,000 feet with snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches and up to 2 feet along the Sierra crest, while 1 to 3 inches of snow accumulation is expected at lake level. Ridge winds are expected to gust up to 60 mph.

Winter Storm Warning For Yosemite National Park

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Yosemite National Park, above the Valley floor, from 11 AM Monday until 5 PM Wednesday. Additionally, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada, from Monday morning until Wednesday afternoon.

Heavy snow is forecast above those levels, with total snow accumulations ranging from one to three feet.

Visibilities may drop below a quarter of a mile due to falling and blowing snow. Travel could be very difficult to impossible.

If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
