Heartbreaking moment NFL reporter makes brutal comment about player Xavier Legette's dead father in locker room interview

Panthers reporter David Newton has apologized for a 'hurtful' comment he made about receiver Xavier Legette's late father.

The receiver's dad, Anthony, passed away in 2019 of a heart attack, which Newton mentioned in a profile piece of Legette last year.

But the ESPN reporter appeared to forget that Legette's father had passed while the Carolina player spoke to reporters on Friday.

Ahead of the Panthers' matchup with the Cowboys on Sunday, Newton asked Legette – a native of South Carolina – if he ever followed 'America's Team' growing up.

'Yeah, when I was little, my daddy was a Cowboy fan,' Legette replied.

ESPN Carolina Panthers insider apologizes to Xavier Legette over 'innocent mistake'

A reporter who covers the Carolina Panthers has apologized over an insensitive question he asked wide receiver Xavier Legette.

During Legette's media availability this week, David Newton from ESPN asked a question about the Panthers wide receiver being a Dallas Cowboys fan when he grew up, as that's who Carolina is playing this week.

Legette responded by saying he was when he was little, and that stemmed from the fandom of his late father, who passed away in 2019 due to a heart attack.

Despite the fact that Newton has written about Legette's parents passing away in a 2024 article, he didn't seem to recall that with his follow-up question. It's either that or Newton was making a sick joke.

ESPN's David Newton apologizes for insensitive question to Xavier Legette about his late father

During an interview in the Carolina Panthers locker room, ESPN's David Newton sparked controversy by asking Xavier Legetteabout his father's fondness for the Dallas Cowboys, without taking into account that the player lost both parents during his high school years

The question, captured on video, prompted a visible reaction of pain from the 23-year-old catcher, sparking a wave of criticism on social media.

The interview was going smoothly until Newton mentioned Legette's father's fanaticism for the Cowboys. The player, visibly upset, responded awkwardly, remembering the loss of his parents. The situation caused discomfort among the team and NFL fans, who considered the question insensitive and out of place.
