5 Takeaways: Omarion Hampton Going on Injured Reserve With Ankle Injury
The Chargers are now 3-2 after Sunday's loss to the Commanders.
Here are five takeaways from Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh's Monday press conference.
The Bolts will be without Omarion Hampton for at least the next four games.
Chargers Head Coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that the 2025 first-round pick is headed to Injured Reserve due to an ankle injury he sustained late in Week 5.
"He's going to miss time. Ankle injury," Harbaugh said. "We will put him on IR to return so he'll miss at least four games and then he'll return as soon as he can after that."
Hampton had been one of the Chargers most productive offensive players so far this season, tallying 86 total touches for 450 yards and two touchdowns.
Chargers placing top RB Hampton (ankle) on IR
El SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton will be placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury, coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday.
By going on IR, Hampton will miss at least the next four games.
Hampton appeared to suffer the injury on a fourth-and-2 play with 1:53 remaining in the third quarter of the Chargers' 27-10 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The first-round rookie tripped over Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu and came up limping. Hampton didn't return to the game and left the stadium with a walking boot on his left foot.
The Chargers selected Hampton with the 22nd pick in this year's draft and signed veteran running back Najee Harris in the offseason to build the type of rushing offense that has defined Harbaugh teams. Now, Harris suffered a season-ending ruptured Achilles in Week 3, and Hampton will miss time.

While Hampton is eligible to return to action ahead of the Chargers' Week 10 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he is not expected to be elevated from IR by then. The Chargers have a bye week in Week 12, which offers a natural spot for the rookie to return. However, the Chargers are expected to be in the trade market for a running back and have been active participants, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, so Hampton's workload could be different upon his return.
