Taylor Swift’s ‘Showgirl’ Rocks Box Office With $33M, Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Smashing Machine’ Opens to Career-Worst $6M

'Showgirl' pulled in huge numbers for a 89-minute "cinematic experience" that's neither a concert film nor a doc but rather a (smart) promotional stunt for Swift's new album. Overseas, it took in $46 million.

Taylor Swift‘s special Life of a Showgirl album release event towered over the competition at the domestic box office — including films featuring two of the world’s biggest stars, Dwayne Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio — with an estimated weekend bounty of $33 million. Overseas, it earned a better-than-expected $13 million for a global haul of $46 million.

That’s a record-breaking number for what’s being described as a “cinematic experience” that’s playing for only three days in cinemas. In other words, it’s neither a concert pic nor a documentary, but rather a promotional event timed to the release of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, which dropped Friday and is already setting sales records. The 89-minute big screen event is a mix of music videos, behind-the-scenes footage and a series of lyric videos for tracks on her new album. And it’s bookended by the the world premiere of her music video for Showgirl single “The Fate of Ophelia,” which she directed.

Taylor Swift: The Life of a Showgirl Album Review

There’s a 1976 Eve Babitz essay about a magazine reporter who noses into a scoop while watching Elizabeth Taylor eat room-service caviar with onion, right in front of the used car salesman whom she’s supposedly dating. Surely, the reporter thinks, the one and only Elizabeth Taylor would not subject a lover to onion breath? Indeed not—the telltale allium portends that at this very moment, dear Liz is deep in secret negotiations to remarry Richard Burton! That’s world-historic gossip. I don’t usually go as far out of my way to think about Taylor Swift’s upcoming wedding to Travis Kelce, but then she announced her new album on his podcast, and one track on it is a song-length dick joke. At least everyone’s having a giggle—I don’t even know what happened to the poor used car salesman.

Taylor Swift brings music craze back to the box office

After another bittersweet end to the summer box office season, American multiplexes are going to “shake it off.”

The AMC-distributed “Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party of a Showgirl” opened Friday as part of a three-day run in 3,700 theaters to coincide with Swift’s 12th studio album, “The Life of a Showgirl,” providing a much-needed lift for movie theaters. The movie pulled in $15.8 million domestically on Friday, according to a statement AMC shared with CNN, and is expected to earn up to $30 million domestically over the three-day weekend.

The limited theatrical run comes about two years after the release of “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour,” which was the biggest opening weekend for a concert movie ($93 million domestically) and the highest-grossing concert movie domestically ($180 million), according to Box Office Mojo.
